What About the Rainbow?

Who has not marveled at the beauty of a rainbow? Lately, the rainbow has become one of the most dominant themes in Western Civilization. Children wave rainbow flags and sing songs in school. Massive parades celebrate the rainbow with naked men chanting “We’re coming for your children.” Who would have thought that the world would become so enamored with the rainbow?

However, the impressive beauty of a rainbow was designed by God to remind us of an important promise He made to humanity thousands of years ago:

Genesis 9:11-17 – I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

God was able to make this covenant with Noah because Noah obeyed in preaching the message for that time, building the ark (read “church” in our time), and he went into the ark as directed. Later God made covenants with Abram and Moses, which are very much related and are the foundation of the covenant with us, the new covenant. All these covenants are, like Noah’s, dependent upon our obedience. Here is the new covenant:

Jeremiah 31:31-33 – Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Seeing the rainbow, we know we can trust all of God’s promises, including the one that says, “Surely I am coming soon.” We should remember this every time we see a rainbow.

The Bible has two references to the rainbow associated with God on His throne in heaven:

Ezekiel 1:28 – Like the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking.

Revelation 4:2-3 – At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. And he who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald.

Thus, the rainbow is a symbol of God’s magnificence, power, and glory. It is one with His presence. We should remember this, too, every time we see a rainbow.

Finally, when Jesus, Himself, came and visited John in vision, as described in Revelation 10, with the little book that had been opened (the unsealing of the book of Daniel at the time of the end), He came with a rainbow over His head. Jesus is guiding His remnant church with special truth for the last days. He will wrap up the misery in this world and bring deliverance to His faithful.

Revelation 10:1 – Then I saw another mighty angel [Jesus] coming down from heaven, wrapped in a cloud, with a rainbow over his head, and his face was like the sun, and his legs like pillars of fire.

We can see that God made the rainbow for a purpose. It is intimately connected with His purposes in saving people. When we see a rainbow, we should think of our ultimate deliverance.

So, what does Satan think of the rainbow? He clearly sees its importance to God and to us, so he perverts it. The rainbow does not belong to the LGBT movement; it belongs to God and His people. Its use as a symbol of rebellion against God and celebration of depravity is evil. It is being forced down our throats by government, media, businesses, academia, and society in general. God’s people should humbly (not with a Pride Month but with a humble life) reclaim the rainbow as a symbol of God’s glory, promises, truth, and deliverance. Let us think about it, talk about it, and use it to praise God for His goodness to us.
